"Music Makes My Brain Smarter"
When I asked a fourth grader how music affected her life, this is what she told me: music makes my brain smarter. As an adult, let me explain how this statement fits into my life. I could read music before I could read words, but words came quickly after. By the time I was in Kindergarten, I was reading at a third grade level and while most children could only add one plus on, I could multiply. Music has been the inspiration in my life and the driving force behind my educational successes. It has made me who I am today, and I am committed to having fine arts programs accessible to all children.
"It Starts With Me"
I know that my Fine Arts mission must begin with me and my passion for bringing my message to others. I have already worked hard to set a positive example as a musician, bandleader, actor, composer, and performer. I have introduced the Fine Arts into the lives of many, and I am proud to have had the opportunity to do so.
"Reach For STARS"
One of the most powerful instruments of education that we have today is the Fine Arts. It can be the vehicle by which our children challenge themselves, build community and cooperation, as well as develop creativity and competence in all subjects. Fine Arts programs have drastically eroded over the last thirty years in our schools because too many people see Fine Arts programs as "separate" secondary programs. However, the reality is that we need to prepare our youth for the future and give them a vision for tomorrow. I do just this through my presentations by encouraging children to focus on the positives in their lives, make the most of their educational experience, and that with a little bit of work and a lot of heart, every child can reach for the STARS... and become one.
